Ask anyone, Whenever I spoke before of
my aspirations for that summer's body of
work I mentioned ideas like "romance",
"amour!" surely a city such as Paris must
be dripping with it! How funny it was for
me to find when I actually arrived, that
this aspect of Paris exists, but to me,
paled in comparison to the magnificent
and mysterious world of the subway- the
undulating movement and transience of
its people and what it represents. I'm a
Texas girl, where I come from, subway
life doesn't exist. In a city such as Paris,
walking into a subway you find a
concentration of all that is Paris, faults
and all. The beautiful as well as the
grungy make this place real for me.
One day Instead of turning
right to follow my usual daily
route, I turned left and
happened upon this scene on
the banks of a river that I wasn't
aware existed. The performer
was masked and writhing onthe
ground as thephotographer
snapped away. The pained
gestures, the constant crawling movement- moving onward
throughout, the artist to me was conveying through his
performance some sort of inner-personal struggle was so
rivetting that it inspired me immediately. I sat down and
began these pieces.....

This is one of the first in a third series of collages on paper. They are inspired by
newspaper and magazine clippings that I have collected. I have a huge difficulty
picking up the language here and often feel like a total outsider. Residing here,
but not really part of the society here. Often I feel that Paris works awfully hard
to make sure that you always remember that. The background of these collages
serve as a constant reminder of where I am and I have no idea what some of
them say so I have interpreted them imposing some of my own stories and
experiences.
